I still have my original chef's set from 30 years ago; it's missing the boning knife, which eventually lost its handle, but the rest of the knives are still going strong (well, someone stole the paring knife from the set, hence this purchase.) I often give Wusthof knives for wedding presents. While knives seem a bit superstitiously bad as a wedding present, I know that a good set is one you buy ONCE and you almost never need to buy knives again.This set is a santoku, which is a Japanese style knife with divots on the blade that help release finely sliced foods. I thought I'd never find a knife to replace the utility of a chef's standard knife, but the santoku is sort of a cross between a chef's standard knife and a paring and a slicing knife. The thinner and shorter blade allow fine slicing and chopping work, though for out-and-out dice-and-mince, I prefer the heavier, longer blade of the standard style knife. But I find, most of the time I am reaching for the santoku when I cook, especially cooking boned chicken breast, fish or vegetables.The paring knife is the bird's beak style (pointed downward) and is great for fine work. This is what I had in my original set and it was my go-to knife and it was stolen when I moved along with a few other special items. Apparently the thief was also a gourmet cook. I replaced the paring knife with a normal pointed kind, and not a Wusthof and you know, I missed this knife so much, I had to go get another one.If you are giving gifts, this set will take any person quite far towards owning good, useful cutlery. Add a bread knife and a chef's knife (no doing without that one), you're pretty much set in the knife department. And you won't be replacing them anytime soon, because they will hold up for decades. I rarely buy knives! In fact, I've bought them twice: the original set, the replacement for the paring knife and the santoku.

The santoku knife is very sharp and great for using it with anything and everything. The small chef's knife is also wonderful, I'm very pleased with both these knives.

Pricey, but very well balanced and sharp. Cuts a ripe tomato. Hand wash and dry as soon as you use them.
