I bought this knife set for my daughter as she was moving into her first new home. My intention was to buy her a set of knives which would last a lifetime. My son (who owned a knife store franchise) suggested the Cold Steel set and so I made the purchase. I was very pleased with the quality of the knives both handles and steel. I would suggest these knives as a moderately priced knife set for anyone and intend to get a set for myself.

I have been a fan of cold steel knives for a long time. I have been carrying the same recon 1 knife for the last 10 years. I got married 5 years ago and wanted my wife to have a good set of kitchen cutlery. I have found the cold steel knives to be very good kitchen knives. They hold an edge well and maintaining the edge is a fairly simple chore. Now for the bad part. It pains me to say this but Cold Steel could have a 5 star product here but for one thing. The kraton handles do not stand up to extended use. The paring knife handle has started to crumble as well as the handle on the chef's knife. Cold Steel has good steel. But they really need to rethink their use of rubber on the handles. I give this set of knives 3 stars because the steel is good and easily maintainable. But good steel with a bad handle is a real disappointment. I have carefully scraped the rubber off the handles and exposed a hard plastic handle underneath. The thickness is much smaller now and the handles are still useful. Spending your hard earned dollars for a set of knives that should last a lifetime, just to have them last a few years is a real bummer. I am still a Cold Steel fan, just not a fan of this particular item. I am currently thinking of replacing the Cold Steel kitchen classic set with Henckles or maybe Boker.

I do not know how long the 5 star reviewers have had their knives but I got a set of them as a gift about a year ago. The rubberized handles began to disintegrate within a few months. Literally falling apart! They became very sticky (gooey really) and chucks have fallen out of the ones I use the most. The handles are also very hard to clean; food gets stuck in the grooves and will not scrub out of the rubber. It is very disgusting. The knives do hold an edge but who wants sticky, dirty, gooey handles near/on there food? I must let you know that these have never seen the inside of a dishwasher as it states clearly in the instruction pamphlet not to do so, just NOT a good design. I sometimes wonder if the chlorine in our city water has caused this? or if acids from chopping fruits/veggies has caused it? I have written Cold Steel about the problem and am waiting for a response. I will update on their customer service when I hear back. I would definitely not recommend buying these knives, buy something with a nice hard handle that will not fall apart on you!
