I own 3 Shun knifes, I use them frequently and have never had a blade chip or dent or do anything except provide excellent service. This leave me to concluded that all these people complaining about chip blade are using their knifes improperly. Harder steel can hold a sharper edge and hold it longer but the down side is the it is more brittle and if you don't use them, clean them and store them correctly they will break. If your going to buy an expensive knife it your responsibility to yourself to learn how to care for it. Plenty of videos on YouTube that will teach anyone in need proper usage and care for quality knifes.

Love Shun knives..probably the best I have ever owned. They slice through a melon like it was butter. They do need to be handled carefully...always cut on a block and don't bang them around in the sink when washing..the tips are fragile and I actually broke off the tip somehow. The knife could be repaired fortunately since it was just the very tip. Expensive..but well worth the price. I have owned several Shun knives for 2 or 3 years and they are just as sharp as the day I purchased them.
